Pregnancy & Gynecologic Ultrasound

What is an ultrasound?
An ultrasound is an imaging test our staff at The Women's Group uses to look at the uterus, ovaries, and other reproductive structures. The test works by using sound waves to capture images of internal structures. Ultrasounds are used both during pregnancy to monitor a growing baby and outside of pregnancy to evaluate gynecologic health.
When does The Women’s Group recommend an ultrasound?
Our doctors may recommend a gynecologic ultrasound when a woman experiences pain, abnormal bleeding, or another concern involving the reproductive system. Ultrasounds are also used at several points during pregnancy to monitor the baby's development. During pregnancy ultrasounds, we provide expectant mothers with keepsake images and video clips of their baby.
What happens during an ultrasound?
During your ultrasound, our technician uses a handheld device called a transducer, sometimes referred to as a wand, to capture images of internal structures. Depending on what your doctor is looking for, this may be done vaginally or over the abdomen. You may feel some mild pressure, but the procedure itself is quick and painless. Once your ultrasound is complete, the images are reviewed and the results are shared with your doctor, who will discuss them with you.
Do patients experience pain during ultrasounds?
Most patients experience little to no discomfort during an abdominal ultrasound, aside from some mild pressure. Vaginal ultrasounds can feel a bit different for each patient, some feel only mild pressure, while others may experience more noticeable discomfort or even pain, particularly if you're already dealing with pelvic pain, tenderness, or certain gynecologic conditions. Every patient's experience is different, and that's completely normal. If you're feeling discomfort or pain at any point during your ultrasound, please speak up, our technicians and doctors want to know, and we'll always do what we can to help you feel more comfortable.
Who can come to the OB ultrasound with the patient?
We ask that only one person accompany the patient to the ultrasound. While we discourage bringing small children, if they must come with you, they should be in a stroller, and another adult should be present to supervise them.
Can patients record their OB ultrasounds?
Patients are not able to record their own ultrasound or share it in real time (for example, over FaceTime), as this is a medical exam. However, we're happy to send you keepsake images and short video clips of your ultrasound afterward, straight to your phone or email.
When can I expect my ultrasound results?
For gynecologic ultrasounds, your doctor will typically review your results and follow up with you within a few business days. For OB ultrasounds, many patients are able to discuss their results with their doctor the same day, right after the exam.
